Employers must manage work-related road risk (WRRR) in the same way as any other workplace hazard. Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, this responsibility applies to any worker who drives or rides a vehicle on the road as part of their job, including those in the gig economy, limb (b) workers, and self employed contractors.
This requirement covers both company vehicles and the grey fleet—vehicles owned and used by workers for business purposes.
Driving for work is one of the highest risk activities many workers undertake. Effective management reduces injuries, ill health, and fatalities, while also improving morale, reducing
stress, and increasing operational efficiency.
Commuting is generally not included unless a worker travels from home to an alternative work
location that is not their usual place of work.

Risk Assessment
Employers must carry out a formal risk assessment for all driving for work activities.

Journey Planning and Management
Is the journey necessary?

Incident Reporting and Review
Employers should implement a clear system for reporting all work-related road incidents and near misses.
